Specific challenges must be met in every single processing zone at malting plants and distilleries. At a time when firms are required to switch to LED lighting, opting for quality, effective and ultra-solid luminaires (Sammode products benefit from an 8-year warranty and generally last for several decades) can drastically reduce maintenance costs in the long term. Sammode luminaires are known for their stylish finish and elegance, and are popular with both architects and visitors to distilleries.

When grains are delivered to a malting plant, they are initially stored in silos to mature prior to transformation. Dust levels tend to be high in these silos, with risks of dust explosions, justifying the ATEX 21 and 22 ratings. In addition, temperatures can be high (up to 50°C) in the upper zones of silos.

The luminaires installed at these sites must be able to withstand these conditions and be totally dust-proof well into the future. Sammode’s wide range of ATEX-certified tubular lamps are ideal for such requirements, as well as being easy to install, totally modular and ultra-durable. Sammode can even supply tubular solutions for high ceilings, up to 11,000 lm, offering an ideal alternative to heavy and expensive ATEX floodlights.

During steeping, the grains are soaked in water for several days to increase moisture and oxygen content in view of germination. The germination process lasts several days. During this period, the grain is steeped in water and constantly stirred to allow for germination without any risk of rot. The germinated grain is then known as green malt.

Steeping and germination zones are some of the most extreme industrial zones in terms of relative humidity, reaching levels of 100%. Luminaire housings must be completely and durably sealed to withstand these extreme humidity levels, particularly with the switch to LED models, considering the electronic components required. Other extreme requirements also apply in these zones, such as vibrations, dirt and high-pressure cleaning, meaning that ultra-solid and long-lasting luminaires are essential.

Requirements

  • All types of humidity
  • Dirt
  • Vibrations
  • High-pressure cleaning

Kilning, heating and drying are different processes and contribute to the transformation of the green malt into quality malt that can be used to produce alcoholic beverages. All of these phases are critical to ensure the quality of the finished product. Malting plants apply their “recipes” over 2 to 3 days to guarantee the aromas added by the malt during the distillation process.

Lighting in such areas must meet several requirements. Luminaires must withstand temperatures of up to 85°C during heating phases, as well as the vibrations induced by machines, dust levels (some of these zones are ATEX 22), and chemical damage during high-pressure cleaning with corrosive detergents.

Requirements

  • High temperatures
  • Vibrations
  • Dust (ATEX classifications may apply)
  • Chemical damage

While the malt is transformed at a malting plant, the finished product is then delivered to a distillery for conversion into an alcoholic beverage. Step 1 is to mill the malt and reduce the grains into a powder known as grist. This powder is mixed with hot water (at 60°C) to produce “wort” after a few hours. Yeast is then added to convert the sugar into alcohol. This phase takes 2 to 3 days and produces a hot liquid with around 8° alcohol known as “wash”.

While this transformation process might not create the most extreme environment overall, humidity, high temperatures and machinery vibrations are all mandatory components in milling, brewing and fermenting. Just like the other production areas, solid emergency lighting is also essential to allow personnel to evacuate safely in the event of a power cut.

Requirements

  • Humidity
  • Temperature
  • Vibrations

Distillation zones are the core feature of a spirit works. The “wash”’ is heated to high temperatures in stills to transform the alcohol vapours into strong alcohols over one or two phases. Each alcoholic beverage has its own specific features and character which depend on the quality of the malt and the water, and the size of the still, as well as distillation expertise.

Distillation zones are considered as extreme environments, primarily due to the risk of explosions caused by the gases (ATEX 1 and 2 environment) released by the alcohol vapours throughout the distillation process. The stills are heated, which also leads to high temperatures locally. Sammode can offer luminaires designed for ATEX zone 1 environments, with the highest levels of explosion risks, and ATEX zone 2 environments.

Requirements

  • ATEX gas (zones 1 & 2)
  • Alcohol vapours
  • Local high temperatures

Recommended products

  • Sabatier Xtrem

Borosilicate glass tube ø133 for extreme or highly corrosive ATEX zone 1 atmosphere

The spirit is transparent when it leaves the still. The spirit acquires its hue and initial aromas during the final preparatory stage, while ageing in barrels or storage warehouses. The minimum ageing period lasts three years, e.g. for whisky ageing in oak barrels. Up to 2% of the alcohol evaporates during ageing.

Some storage sites for ageing barrels are classified as ATEX zone 2 due to this evaporation, requiring specific lighting.  In addition, some sites have high ceilings, which also implies suitable lighting. Sammode boasts the expertise required to meet the specific demands of such environments, while offering stylish solutions for areas open to the public and to flatter the stills.

Distilleries are both production sites and public spaces that welcome visitors and showcase products and know-how. For this reason, distilleries generally include a visitor and reception area. Lighting in such spaces must offer visual comfort and look great.

Sammode can offer a unique range with benefits such as modularity, the type of materials used and quality finishes, which is why its luminaires are popular with architects looking for elegant lighting with character (ambient, cosy and subdued lighting), for industrial environments open to the general public. Thanks to the quality and durability of its luminaires, Sammode can also guarantee the visual comfort of visitors, flatter industrial equipment and ensure visitor safety.
