Sand filter, degreaser, settling and sludge treatment basins are the main operational zones for water treatment. Wastewater is progressively cleaned in these basins, removing increasingly fine materials, before the water is sent to a clarifier for final treatment.
The luminaires lighting up these areas, which are also passageways, must be particularly well sealed and robust, able to withstand the risk of explosion (ATEX) and humidity, and provide light in outdoor areas exposed to UV radiation and temperature variations. With this environment in mind, the switch to LED luminaires provides an opportunity to invest in equipment with an exceptional service life and limit the need for maintenance thanks to corrosion-proof housings, protecting the electronics from humidity over the long term.
Personnel at wastewater treatment plants primarily use maintenance tunnels to move around indoor areas, but they are also used outdoors. Maintenance tunnels are used by personnel passing through, as is the case for clarifiers, which are the final wastewater treatment tanks where the water is subjected to centrifugal forces to remove sludge (captured at the bottom of the tank) and floating residues (which are progressively removed by pouring).
These zones must be equipped with efficient, solid and durable general lighting to guarantee smooth operation and staff safety. As in other areas in the wastewater treatment plants, it is recommended that robust emergency lighting is also installed, adapted to the constraints of the specific environment. Emergency lights designed to guide an evacuation in the event of a power outage could be installed, or alternatively replacement lighting models with a 3-hour life to guarantee that operations can continue.
Sludge treatment areas and incinerators extend the treatment process for waste extracted from wastewater, by treating and drying sludge for future use as agricultural manure, and by burning sludge residues that cannot be treated. The luminaires installed near the incinerators must be able to withstand the very high temperatures reached by this equipment.
