Paris is in the spotlight with the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Olympic Village, located in Saint-Denis, becomes the nerve center of this effervescence, welcoming athletes from all over the world. Sammode, French designer and manufacturer of lighting fixtures for nearly a century, is proud to light up part of the village! In particular, we took part in the transformation of the former RATP electrical substation into a multifunctional space for athletes.

Once home to the Paris metro’s electrical installations, Halle Maxwell has been completely refurbished for the Olympic Games. This imposing building (220 meters long, 22 meters wide and 15 meters high!) currently houses fitness rooms, an information center and offices for the delegations. The new buildings connected to the Hall house the athletes’ accommodation.
But after the Games, the building will eventually house almost 2,500 Ministry of the Interior employees. Halle Maxwell will form an integral part of the Universeine district, offering 79,000 m² of housing, 63,000 m² of office space, as well as shops, a crèche and a medical center. The complexity of this project lies in its dual purpose: firstly Olympic, then tertiary. All this, less than a year after the end of the Olympic Games.
This ambitious conversion presents a number of challenges in terms of compliance with standards, particularly in terms of fire safety. Sammode luminaires, renowned for their robustness and versatility, are designed to meet the needs of this type of complex project.
Sammode installed around 300 luminaires in two areas of the Olympic Village. The Elgar and Scorel models have been installed as wall and ceiling lights respectively in the superstructure’s staircases, providing comfortable, functional lighting. The Purcell model, meanwhile, illuminates the great heights of the Maxwell Hall, providing diffused, homogeneous light.
These fixtures have been chosen for their elegant design, robustness and durability. Lighting that’s just as suited to today’s sports facilities as it is to future workspaces. This flexibility is essential to support the building’s evolution throughout its life.

This project to refurbish Halle Maxwell is part of a drive to enhance 20th century industrial heritage and promote innovation. It also pursues ambitious sustainability objectives, aimed at promoting more environmentally-friendly Olympic Games. This includes reducing carbon footprint, using materials from the circular economy, and a sustainable urban renewal approach.
These values of scalability, sustainability and reusability resonate deeply with Sammode’s DNA. By participating in this project, we are affirming our commitment to forward-looking lighting solutions. We’re proud to contribute (in our own small way) to promoting French innovation on the international stage… Particularly at a time of sporting celebration when the eyes of the world are on the French capital!

LED directional wall light ø70.
Transparent and reflective, the Elgar wall light is the perfect blend of Sammode know-how and design. The metal louvre with its inclined slats, the signature feature of this iconic luminaire, conceals the light source for maximum visual comfort.
LED directional ceiling luminaire, ø70 clear body.
Both functional and aesthetic, the Scorel ceiling luminaire plays with transparency and reflections. For even more design, it can be dressed up with Coal flanges and collars, or with a silver-, copper-, brass- or petrol-tinted device cover.

LED ceiling luminaire with longitudinal scrolling grid ø70
With its scrolling grid partially concealing the light source, the Purcell ceiling luminaire is the perfect blend of technology and design. In addition to glare control, perfect control of luminous flux results in a high-performance luminaire. The Purcell is the ideal companion for the Elgar sconce.
